How Ring products work

What do I need to use Ring products?
Ring products require an existing home wifi network for setup and use, a mobile device (phone or tablet), and the Ring app, which lets you monitor and control all your Ring devices in one place. All Ring devices work with 2.4 GHz wifi; some also support 5 GHz (Dual-Band). Ring products are designed for your home wifi network—they do not work with a mobile hotspot and do not support Bluetooth.

Ring products

Ring offers a range of smart home security devices:

  • Ring Video Doorbells — Built-in camera and Two-Way Talk so you can hear and speak to visitors through the Ring app. They send notifications and can record activity. Reviewing recorded video requires a Ring subscription; events are stored in the cloud for up to 180 days.
  • Security Cameras — Indoor and outdoor options, battery-powered, plug-in, or hardwired. Some include motion-sensing lighting.
  • Ring Alarm Security System — DIY home security with Base Station, Keypad, Contact Sensor, Motion Detector and Range Extender. You can add more components to fit your home.
  • Ring Smart Lighting — Control Ring Smart Lights from the Ring app and link them to select doorbells and cameras.

Ring subscriptions

Do I need a subscription to use Ring devices?
No. Ring devices work without a subscription. Without one, you can view real-time video and answer doorbell notifications as they happen. With a compatible Ring subscription, you can save, review, and share video recordings. New video doorbells, cameras, and alarms come with a free subscription trial that starts when you set up the device in the Ring app.

Powering your Ring device

Does a Ring device require wires to work?
Some doorbells and cameras are battery-powered and don't need wiring. Others are plug-in only or hardwired. Battery doorbells can be wired to your internal chime for a trickle charge; solar chargers can also provide a trickle charge. Check the product FAQ for that device's power options.
What doorbell transformers are compatible?
Ring doorbells can connect to low voltage transformers (8V–24V AC only, 40V max, 50/60Hz) that power internal chimes. Intercom systems and DC transformers are not compatible. Do not use halogen or garden lighting transformers.
Do I have to turn off power before installing?
Always follow the safety instructions in your device manual. Turn off power at the breaker before working with electrical wires. Electric shock hazard—disconnect power at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Installation by a qualified electrician may be required; check local laws and building codes.
Do I have to charge the battery before setup?
Your doorbell ships partially charged (shipping rules limit fully-charged lithium batteries). There's usually enough charge to set up. If setup fails repeatedly, fully charge the battery first. If you're wiring a battery doorbell, charge to 100% for best performance; hardwiring only provides a trickle charge.
How long does the battery take to recharge?
Depending on the device, a full recharge typically takes 4–10 hours.
Will I be notified when the battery is low?
Yes. You'll get email reminders and the Ring app will show a low-battery warning on devices that need charging.

Setting up and using your Ring device

How do I get help with setup and installation?
When you set up a Ring device, the Ring app provides step-by-step instructions.
Can more than one person use a Ring doorbell or camera?

Do I need the app open to get notifications?
No. As long as you're signed in on your smartphone, tablet, or computer, you can receive notifications.
How do I know which device triggered a notification?
During setup you give each device a unique name. Notifications include the device name so you know where the activity is.
Can Ring devices record at night?

Do Ring devices work in extreme heat or cold?
Ring devices are designed for typical outdoor conditions. For details on extreme temperatures, check Ring Help or product documentation.
